The challenge
Latin America and the Caribbean could become the first developing region to reach universal access to electricity. By 2021 it already covered 97.56% of its population — but that still leaves close to 17 million people without access, concentrated in rural areas, dispersed communities, and indigenous peoples, more than half of them women. Reaching that last mile takes fine-grained planning, and that planning runs into a basic obstacle: there is no integrated, publicly accessible regional platform that brings together information on electricity coverage, infrastructure, and geospatial indicators in a way that's comparable across countries. Without it, prioritizing investment, comparing regions, or simply knowing where information is missing becomes far harder than it needs to be.
The platform
The IDB's brief defines an interactive geospatial map as the backbone: overlapping data layers, one-click country or region comparison, indicators with per-country detail, explicit handling of missing information to avoid misreading the data, and export in multiple formats (CSV, Shapefile, GeoJSON, Excel, KML) alongside visual reports. All of it integrated with the visual identity and infrastructure of the IDB's Energy Hub on ESRI ArcGIS technology, publicly accessible with no registration required, built to support at least 300 concurrent users, and compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA — the same accessibility standard we hold everything we build to. The architecture, the implementation decisions, and the progress on each deliverable are, for now, confidential to the project.
